Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

The 787-9 Dreamliner is a stretched version of the 787-8.  It has a seating capacity suitable for 250-290 passengers. In the past, the 787-9 aft and mid fuselage sections was fabricated, assembled, and integrated at the North Charleston plant in South Carolina. From there, it was sent to Everett for final inspection.

The 787-8 achieved final assembly at the South Carolina plant for over three years. The first assembly of a 787-8 in South Carolina occurred in 2012. Now, in 2015, the plant is celebrating a new milestone with the delivery of the first 787-9 to roll out of Boeing South Carolina Final Assembly. The Dreamliner rolled off the assembly line in January 2015 and completed its first flight last month. In addition to being the first 787-9 from South Carolina, it is also the 250th Dreamliner to be delivered.

Airlines continue to take possession of the new Dreamliner. In July of 2014, All Nippon Airways took possession of their first 787-9 Dreamliner. Their new plane will allow ANA to meet the growing demand for air travel as the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics approach. ANA is the first airline to operate both Dreamliner variants, the 787-8 and the 787-9. The advantage of the 787-9 over the 787-8 is a fuselage that is 20 feet longer.

Allowing up to 40 more passengers per plane, on top of that the 787-9 will use 20 percent less fuel and produce 20 percent fewer emissions than similar planes. ANA has already ordered 29 more. More than 1000 787ís have been ordered by sixty different customers. Currently, 160 of them are in operation. If the 787-9 wasnít enough, the new 787-10 will continue to improve on the platform.

The first 787-9 Dreamliner assembled in South Carolina was delivered to United Airlines.  This increases Unitedís fleet of 787-9ís to a total of four. In addition to their 4 787-9, United Airlines has 12 787-8ís already in service. United was the first North American carrier to fly the 787-8 in September 2012 and the first to fly a 787-9 in September of 2014. After receiving their 787ís, United Airlines has opened new direct routes from Los Angeles to Melbourne.
